Double Take

One of the reasons I immediately am drawn to this display is because I've never seen anything like it. I am a love of photography and I love how they used it here. They are clearly playing on the emotions of females, with old black and white, romatic pictures from the movies. They keep it classy and make you stop and look. It is interesting how they don't show you the full dress in any of these. They leave a little bit to the imagination which is almost more reason to go in and see for yourself what these beautiful dresses really look like. Once again simplicity is a winner here, with a plain white background and three solid colored dresses.

Anthropologie Displays

Both of these photos were taken of different window displays of the popular Anthropologie stores. Anthropologie is pretty well known for their creative and visually appealing window displays. One of the aspects I think is the most effective about both of these is the flow across the space. The top photo uses flowers, while the bottom photo uses oragami birds, to float your eye across the space and take it to the focus of the display which is the clothing. They are both very light and feminine with the objects and colors used, and do well to complement the clothing on display. This is also another example in which simplicity is effective. There are only two elements, the floating objects and the clothing, yet that is all that is needed to catch your eye.

Lacoste 80th Anniversary Window Display

This video is fun, because it shows a little bit of what goes into the making of window displays, especially one as large as this. For their 80th Anniversary Lacoste had 8 different displays going through the decades and dressing the mannequins accordingly. It is a simple idea, yet fun and effective. They also incorporated an interactive display in which, when a person walked by the tennis balls would move up and down, according to where the person was. It is reminiscent of some of the nike displays, in a previous post.

Chanel

This display is just fantastic. I tend to be more attracted to the simple and understated, but this just works. The chanel letters are just so extravagant and elegant. Chanel has always been a very classy fashion line and the use of pearls emphasize that, they also make this display very feminine. The letters are a clear focal point as you eyes go immediately to them, however the organized chaos of the pearls and the way they drape down from the letters draw your eyes around the rest of the window as well. The models or mannequins are also very understated, however they complement one another. The display has a nice balance, and the use of black and white gives this display a vintage feel and almost takes you back to the Breakfast at Tiffany's days.

Papyrus Display

"Papyrus Window Display" by: Sonny Abesamis is licensed under CC by 2.0

The first word that comes to mind when I see this display is dainty, and also whimsical. It is very much like a fairytale. It has imagination and flows across the window. The composition is very well done with the flower decorations taking your eye across the space. It is quite fitting for a store that sells different kinds of paper and stationary. When you buy stationary it is to write letters and this is usually a very intimate, yet playful act. The color combination is quite beautiful, very pale/earthly colors. The tutu is an interesting addition. I like the way it goes with the colors of the flowers, but not sure the subject matter is completely fitting. It is whimsical, yet what would you do with it?

I work at a Country Club and have recently been assisting with some of the displays throughout the Golf Pro shop. This is a display I was working on with another employee. Some of the things we were thinking about when putting this together were levels and the overall balance and composition of the space. There is a lower level with a variety of both product and other objects to enhance the overall experience of the sapce, and then the golf bags serve as a mid level, while the mannequin and clothing racks bring your eye upwards as well. All of the items are spaced out in such a way that there is a lot to see without it looking cluttered. All of the clothing are uniform in brand, all of the shirts and jackets displayed are Polo brand and there is a logo sign in the middle of the display as well. Each of the little knick knacks displayed to give an old world travel feel, but in a golf clubway. We have the little trunk with an old map on it flanked by two bronze goose heads, which is suggestive of both travel and a hunt or golf club. There are also two old croquet mallets in which is reminiscent of the golf game and the worn look give them some character. Then there is the old travel bag which displays some shirts, and a few old golf books which display a logoed towel. All of these items serve to assist in the experience of the display. To make you feel like you could wear these clothes and travel the world doing it, in old timey golf clubs.

Circus

I have a tendancy to be attracted to the more fun and whimsical displays and Louis Vuitton does just that with these circus window displays. It's fun to see a little bit of the behind the scenes to see just how much work goes into crafting these displays. I think the best part about these displays is how well they show off the product. In each display they find a way to subtly make the produtc the focal point, and keep it interesting with the circus theme at the same time. Such as with the diplay with the elephant balancing with the handbag. Since the elephant blends with the background and it is also tilting towards the handbag your eye is drawn to it. There is also the one where the trapeze artist is hanging upside down almost gesturing to the handbag below her. Also the one with the seal balancing the handbags on his nose, your eye goes directly up the line of handbags. Besides the great use of focal point, the circus is also relatable. Everyone has been to the circus at one point or another and find some amusment and feeling of fun in it.

Nike Interactive Displays

This video shows a few different interactive window displays that Nike implemented in London in 2012. These are all really fun displays. They are simple, which I think is one of the easiest ways to be effective. They are so subtle that you could almost miss them, but when they move with you or activate as you walk by it catches your attention. One of the ones I think is really great is the one that advertises the reflective jacket. They place the jacket at eye level in the center of the display and then behind it have rows of reflector lights that you might see on bikes or joggers. So they play with the idea that there jacket is comparable to these reflective lights. With the lights flashing on and off in sequence, it is something that would make you stop and look. Another one that is fun, is very interactive. They have this little circle for a passerby to stand on and then it counts down and tells you to jump, and records your height and then you can save it to their gallery for others to see. All of these ads are fun and interesting and pay attention to detail, and can draw in a person walking on the street.

In the spirit of Saint Valentine

In the spirit of the holiday, I've found many Valentines day displays, but these two were my favorite. They are both very simple yet eye catching, and elegant. The first one is advertising some quite wonderful high heels. This display is beautiful, they have a nice use of color, reds for Valentines day. The reds go well together it's not too much and they don't ever clash. There is a good level to it, I imagine from the outside it is around eye level. It is very feminine which I think is to its advantage, for the holiday and the product. If I saw these shoes in a window I would go into that store immediately!

As for this display, it is also simple and elegant. They have a fantastic use of focal point the arrows point straight to the product and your eye goes there instantly. The arrows are very pretty, reminiscent of cupid and the heart formation is a nice detail. The gold color was a good choice it gives off a lavish and indulgent vibe, and of course every woman wants indulgence on Valentines day.

Vintage Delights

These two window displays were once featured at the store front of Ted Kennedy Watson, who designed them himself. He owns his own store and sells mostly home good type products. He is very passionate about what he does both and it is visible both in the products he sells and the window displays he designs. These two displays in particular caught my eye. First of all I have a love for anything that is vintage and historical. I also have a love for photography, so the display on the bottom with all of the old photographs used as a sort of wallpaper, I think is fantastic. Both of his displays are different, yet cohesive. They both give you an old time feel, but are diverse in the way they do it. The display on the top has a focus around old apothecary bottles. The numerous shapes and sizes of the bottles keep it interesting. Also the large containers on the floor go with these little bottles and the fact that the smaller bottles are on a higher level and the large ones on the ground, creates a nice balance. The other side is focused around old photography, complete with old photographs, and old camera, and an old trunk that has a reminiscent quality and you could see being filled with old photos. One of the things Watson does a great job of is balance. He uses levels really well and keeps everything displayed at dynamic angles. These window displays are quite fabulous and if I were walking by this storefront I would be drawn in by these lovely displays.

Interactive

Interactive window displays are increasing in popularity throughout the world. People are finding more and more innovative ways to use technlogy to interact and engae with consumers. In this video Diesel clothing company uses this interactive rock show to engage people on the streets. Iin the video you can see how interested and amused the concumers are with the display and that they enjoy it. However the question is did the business of the store increase with this display? If not then what really is the purpose of such an extravagant effort. Because a window display is also supposed to advertise what you are selling, so is this successful or not? That is for the consumer to decide.
